With an electric toothbrush you can brush your teeth a bit faster and better than with a manual toothbrush. Because the electric brush rotates or vibrates, you do not have to make so many hand movements yourself. It is easier to put the brush in the right place on your teeth. But a manual toothbrush will also clean your teeth as well.
Is it better to use an electric toothbrush than a manual toothbrush?
Is tartar bad for your teeth?
Tartar is not harmful in itself. The bacteria contained in tartar are made harmless by the calcification. But the rough surface of tartar makes it easy for plaque to stick on your teeth.
Tartar forms when plaque calcifies and it can develop above and below the gum line. Above the gum it is mainly seen around the lower teeth and the upper back teeth near the salivary glands. It can also form in pockets underneath the gum. So tartar does have negative consequences for your teeth and the gums.
Do mouthwashes help?
The only mouthwash that really helps is chlorhexidine. That is a good disinfectant. However, the disadvantage is that it coats your teeth. Other disinfectants are less effective. You should not use a mouthwash to replace cleaning your teeth.
Should I brush my teeth after every meal?
Cleaning your teeth once a day is sufficient. It takes far longer than a day to create plaque containing harmful bacteria. If you like, you can brush your teeth more often, for example, to freshen your breath or make your teeth look better.
If my gums recede, are they inflamed?
Your gum will recede sooner through damage than by inflammation. You can damage the surface of your gums if you brush too hard. Then the gum will hurt. But your gum can also recede if it is severely inflamed and you have a lot of bone loss. When people grow older, the gum will always recede slightly, however the gums should never bleed.
If my gums bleed, are they inflamed?
Healthy gums do not bleed when you brush or clean them in another way. If you brush too hard, you can damage the surface of the gum because you are brushing off the layer of skin. The gum will feel painful to the touch and can bleed. If you leave the painful spot alone for a few days, the gum will recover: it will no longer be sensitive and will stop bleeding.
What is the best toothpaste to use?
Brushing with toothpaste works better than brushing without. The fluoride in toothpaste makes tooth enamel strong and that means you will get fewer cavities. Some toothpastes contain agents that can make the roots feel less sensitive. But many toothpaste advertisements often promise too much. It is best just to brush your teeth well.
