Almost 50% of the adult population suffers from Gum Disease. Cleaning gums (sub-gingival cleaning) is currently painful, invasive and expensive:
- Ultrasonic and/or traditional tools tend to be painful and often require anaesthesia.
- When done frequently, current sub-gingival cleaning techniques tend to reduce tooth substance and could cause sensitive and narrowed teeth.
- Sub-gingival cleaning can only be done by dental hygienists or dentists and is time consuming.
- Dental professionals don’t offer as many sub-gingival cleaning treatments as they should.
The conclusion: patients tend to dislike the current treatment and are often afraid. This is where the Fluxion comes in.
What is the Fluxion?
The Fluxion is developed for dental professionals to provide non-invasive, easy and effective sub-gingival cleaning. It has a unique method of subgingival cleaning with its interplay between vacuum and fluid applied to the pockets around the natural teeth or implants.
The key differentiator with existing techniques is the vacuum that has two functions: creating under pressure in the pocket while also drawing the bacterial substances from the pocket. This technique disturbs the biofilm by bringing oxygen into the pockets.
An in-vitro study in the ACTA (Academic Center for Dentistry Amsterdam) has shown that the Fluxion is able to clean an artificial pocket of 2mm wide and 10mm deep, sucking the bacterial substance up till 9 millimeters.
The advantages of the Fluxion are:
- Easy to use: dental professionals will be able to use this without training
- No loss of tooth substance: the subgingival cleaning is done with a pulsated rinsing under vacuum. It won’t cause sensitive teeth.
- Low/no risk of bacteremia in the blood: the rinsing is too gentle to push the bacteria in the bloodstream.
- Patients’ prefer the GumCare treatment for it is noninvasive, gentle and completely pain-free.

Who is it for?
The Fluxion is to be used by dental professionals for patients with periodontitis and peri-implantitis.
Clinical research has been conducted on the impact of the Fluxion on periodontitis. Please see the publication of this clinical research in the International Journal of Dental Hygiene: go to publication.

An ACTA in-vitro study (2018) concluded the following about the Fluxion:
‘In conclusion, within the limits of the current project the Fluxion has shown that it can replace the liquid phase in a wide variety of artificial pockets. The Fluxion can also replace a (thick) bacterial suspension but will probably not be able to remove biofilms to a large extent. However, by replacing the surrounding liquids the Fluxion might be able to interfere with the subgingival biofilm and influence its vitality or bacterial .’

Carduso Capital partnered with the GumCareCompanion to take the next steps and to launch the product to the professional market. The Carduso Capital finance will accelerate the company’s market entrance which will initially be focused on the Netherlands and its surrounding countries. Eventually, the product will be aimed at the European and North American market. Co-founder and CSO, dr. Johan van Dijk, periodontist and implantologist emphasized the importance of the Fluxion and the impact of healthy gums on the body.
“Gum diseases could not only cause loss of teeth but could also lead to other serious diseases; inflamed gums could lead to heart diseases, long infections, premature births and could lead to the worsening of existing diabetes. Furthermore, the infection enzymes (CRP) caused by periodontitis, could strengthen other infections in our bodies and weaken the overall immune system.”
